There is a freedom afforded by taking a driving holiday that comes with very few other kinds of holiday. The ability to roam the open roads, stopping where you want and sleeping where you want without being tied to any predetermined itinerary is a feeling that has to be experienced to be appreciated. This is particularly prevalent if you spend every day in a busy workplace and don’t get to spend much time outdoors.

A driving holiday in the UK will bring about a whole host of previously undiscovered delights that you possibly didn’t even know existed. If, for example, you live and work in or near a city, hitting the road and driving around Devon and Cornwall will make it seem as if you are in another world. Lush countryside, gorgeous beaches and quaint villages full of fairytale cottages are all waiting to be explored.

If this is your dream holiday but are worried that your car isn’t up to it, it could be worthwhile considering hiring a vehicle for your holiday. There are some great car deals around, and  a quick internet search will bring up a plethora of results for companies in your area with convenient pick up and drop off points that you can get to easily both before and after your holiday.

While it may be tempting to hire a small car as they will invariably be cheaper, be realistic. Yes they are more economical fuel wise, but you need to consider that you will effectively be living the gypsy life for the duration of your holiday and will be spending a lot of time on the road with all your luggage in the back. If this is a family holiday the kids will need plenty of space in the back, so bear this in mind when you come to selecting a car.

While roaming the British countryside seems the stuff that dreams are made of, remember that many country roads are poorly signposted and it is easy to get lost. Take a look online at the many travel sites which will help you to work out a route that takes in the sites and areas that you want to see but will steer clear of country lanes. This way you know where to go but have set your own itinerary, not following anyone else’s.
